Johannesburg — Nigerian women living in South Africa have been commended for their resilience, leadership and community impact in a special International Women’s Day message delivered by Ambassador Ninikanwa Olachi Okey-Uche, Consul General of the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg.

In her address to the Nigerian diaspora, the Consul General paid tribute to the strength, determination and achievements of Nigerian women who continue to make meaningful contributions while living away from their homeland.

Celebrated annually on International Women’s Day, the global occasion recognises the achievements of women across social, economic and political spheres, while also reinforcing the ongoing call for gender equality.

Women as representatives of their nation

Ambassador Okey-Uche highlighted the important role Nigerian women play in representing their country abroad. She noted that through their conduct, respect for the laws of their host nation and their commitment to positive community engagement, they help shape perceptions of Nigeria within South Africa.

She encouraged members of the Nigerian community to continue fostering harmony and cooperation between the two nations, emphasising the value of mutual respect and shared progress.

The central role of women in shaping society

The Consul General also reflected on the influence women have within families, describing them as the cornerstone of society. She stressed that the lessons children learn at home — including integrity, respect for others and cultural pride — play a vital role in shaping the leaders and citizens of tomorrow.

By nurturing these values, she said, women help guide the future of communities both in South Africa and back in Nigeria.

Living the principle of “Give to Gain”

Referencing the theme “Give to Gain,” Ambassador Okey-Uche urged women to embrace generosity and community spirit by mentoring younger women, sharing knowledge and supporting those in need.

She explained that acts of giving ultimately strengthen communities by creating networks of support, trust and shared growth.

Encouraging women to step into leadership

The Consul General also delivered a strong message of empowerment, encouraging women to take active leadership roles in their careers, businesses and communities without hesitation.

She stressed that women’s ideas, perspectives and contributions are vital in shaping societies and addressing the challenges of the modern world.

Strengthening diaspora unity

As the international community commemorated International Women’s Day, Ambassador Okey-Uche praised the Nigerian diaspora in South Africa for its ongoing contributions to social and economic development.

She reaffirmed the importance of unity, collaboration and cultural pride among Nigerians living abroad, while encouraging women to continue using their influence to inspire positive change.

Concluding her message, the Consul General reminded women that their leadership is not only shaping the future but is already transforming the present.

“The future is female,” she said, “but equally important, women are already shaping the world today.”
