SID Itumeleng Special School Fun-Walk for Autism: Community Unites to Champion Inclusion and Awareness

A wave of blue, colourful placards, and community spirit- filled the streets of Westonaria as SID Itumeleng Special School hosted a successful Autism Awareness Fun-Walk, held at school Premises, on Friday, 22 May 2026.

Early hours of Friday morning, community members of Westonaria, educators, parents, and various organizations gathered for a powerful, and informative Fun-walk for autism children at SID Itumeleng Special School.

The event, led by educators, principal and departmental head Mrs. Mercy Daiby Matjuwadi, brought together parents, learners, educators, community members, and various organizations ina powerful show support for autism children and their families.

Among the stakeholders that partnered with the school all of whom joined hands to promote autism awareness, acceptance, and inclusion:

The walk aimed to educate the public about autism while encouraging greater understanding, and compassion within the community. The event also served as a fundraising initiative with proceed contributing towards the school’s program, and operations needs. Participants marched proudly through the area carrying placards bearings message of hope, equality, and inclusion. The strong turnout reflected the Community’s commitment to advocating for the rights, dignity, and well-being of autistic children.

Addressing the attendees after the walk, SID Itumeleng Special School Principal Miss. Suzanne Mayde Motlhabane thanked parents, and stakeholders for their continued support:

” To all parents of children with autism, your love, patience, and support make a world a difference. Celebrate every milestone, and remember that every child grows of their own pace. To our community, awareness leads to understanding, and understanding leads to acceptance. Together, let’s us create an inclusive world, where every autistic individuals is valued, respected, and given the opportunity to thrive”.

The campaign also highlighted the daily challenges many autistic children face, including communication barriers, social interaction difficulties, sensory sensitivities, and adapting to changes in routine. Organizers stressed that with the right support, understanding, and opportunities, autistic kids could flourish, and contribute meaningfully to society.

Mrs. Nontombi Zondo, Founder of Nomfundo Zondo Foundation, praised the initiative, and emphasized the importance of community involvement:

” Events like this build understanding. Nomfundo Zondo Foundation joined as a stakeholder today, and supported SID Itumeleng Special School, as one of our beneficiaries. When community members walked, and engaged with our learners, awareness grows,and inclusion follows”.

The day ended on a high note as learners, parents, educators, community members, and stakeholders gathered at the school’s hall for activities, and celebration. Laughter,music, and support of togetherness marked the successful conclusion of an event that not only raised awareness but strengthens community bonds.

The Autism Awareness fun-Walk served as a reminder that acceptance begins with understanding,and that every step taken together helps build a more inclusive future for all.
