MMC MLAMBO VISITS THE SPRINGS FRESH PRODUCE MARKET

The MMC for Infrastructure and Economic Development Agency, Ald. Dora Mlambo, recently conducted an oversight inspection of the city’s Fresh Produce Market in Springs!
Spanning an impressive 15,000 square meters of trading space, our facility proudly stands as the third-largest government-owned Fresh Produce Market in the province.
Current Operations & Resilience:
While the market currently generates revenue through competitive storage space fees, the past two years have brought unique challenges.
A seasonal overabundance of rain led to a crop surplus, driving market prices down. Despite this, top income generators like potatoes, onions, bananas, and tomatoes continue to keep the market thriving.
The Future of the Market:
To boost productivity and build economic resilience, the City of Ekurhuleni is looking toward the future:
Innovation: Exploring agro-processing and the establishment of a dedicated Food Bank.
Modernization: Plans are officially in the pipeline to introduce online shopping and transition to a cashless system.
Expansion: MMC Mlambo also visited local city-owned farms, highlighting Ekurhuleni’s massive potential for high-yield agricultural development.
